Urban Adventurers: Volume 7
A look into the life and times of Urban Adventures’ Guides
Cortland, Washington DC
We had the pleasure of speaking with Cortland to ask him 9 questions for all of you to get to know him better! Read on to learn more about this Urban Adventurer!
1. Where are you from?
I am a true native Washingtonian. I was born in DC at a hospital in Georgetown.
2. What are a few of your hobbies and interests outside of guiding?
My hobbies include the typical movie watching and music listening, but I love being creative. I enjoy writing, trying DIY projects, and my most unique hobby is making lamps.
3. What drew you to Urban Adventures?
Besides the cool golf carts, I was already a tour guide for a little over five years and was ready for a change of pace. Urban Adventures provided a new spin on tourism, so I thought it was a great fit.
4. What’s your favorite tour to give?
I enjoy the Food & History Tour on H Street because it allows me to give insight on the DC lifestyle I grew up in.
5. Where would you take guests in DC that’s not a part of a UA tour?
That’s easy! Fredrick Douglass’ home in Historic Anacostia.
6. What’s one of DC’s best hidden gems?
I love Kramerbooks & Afterwords! It’s a bookstore in the front, a bar on the side, and a restaurant in the back. I recommend the Bison Burger and a good book.
7. What’s a good day trip for people visiting DC?
Amusement parks! You actually have a few to pick from. Just outside the city is Six Flags America. A little ways down the highway you have Kings Dominion and Busch Gardens. Water Country USA is not a bad drive away, either!
8. What’s your dream travel experience anywhere in the world?
I would love to stay at an ice hotel, an underwater hotel, and a Minka-styled Japanese home.
9. What’s your Hogwarts house and why?
I must admit that I do not know anything about Harry Potter. Me? I’m a Goonie and a member of The Monster Squad 🙂
